Storage Management

Our Method of Storage Management

Storage management is vital to the overall health of IT infrastructure. With the rising popularity of virtualization and big data, storage systems are a critical component of any IT environment.

Storage performance problems can be damaging and impact the end-user through application performance issues like delays or downtime.

Storage infrastructure management defines the management of the storage devices in the data centers. For infrastructure management, three prime areas are capacity, performance, and availability. We can summarize them as good storage management, making sure the storage is always available, always has enough space, and is fast in terms of performance. Good storage management requires solid processes, policies, and tools to work in coordination.

Storage management tasks include:

  • Volume provisioning, host connections, network, rack provisioning, and business as usual (BAU) operations.
  • Service infrastructure support will help in detecting and identifying events and notifying them. It includes performing hardware replacement, software upgrade, fault isolation, and troubleshooting.
  • Non-disruptive service infrastructure upgrades throughout the service term.
  • Our team will provide remote reporting, automated support services, monitoring, and predictive analytics.
  • We help with asset management, capacity management, offering logistics and lifecycle management including non-disruptive capacity upgrades and other required service infrastructure refreshes.
  • Install services to support capacity expansions or reductions and required upgrades.
  • Ownership of the overall change control process for customer infrastructure includes coordinating approvals as required.
  • Equipment decommissioning and secure erase (working with CTS support) at the time of termination.
  • Equipment pick-up and returns will be done at the time of termination, swapping, or decommissioning.

Performing operational management tasks overview:

  1. Storage provisioning request and volume provisioning (Create and allocate LUNs, Remove and delete LUNs and Expand LUNs).
  2. Create and manage hardware break-fix changes, response, and troubleshooting.
  3. Manage SAN, such as zones using the best practices. It will include Create, Delete, and change the zoning, SAN Port Reservations, SAN Port Reclamations, Storage WWN replacement activities.
  4. Managing storage by creating logical disks, maintaining physical and logical infrastructure, and performing remote and local copies.
  5. Maintain and perform operational procedures to allocate and re-allocate storage to the servers.
  6. Managing the storage devices in the data centers. Three significant areas of management are Capacity, Performance, and Availability.
  7. Implementation of solid processes, policies, and tools.
  8. Manage software license, hardware maintenance, and software support contracts.

Code Upgrade

Code Upgrade

The code update will upgrade your system with advanced operational instructions without requiring any up-gradation in the system hardware. In addition, by updating the code, customers will explore new features added to the system, and it will automatically enhance the user experience while interacting with the system infrastructure.

Code Upgrade will help inform the system’s “built-in software” microcode – Assigned to make the system do its jobs, or more precisely, help to power on and function. Upgrades, like any other programming, can be improved over time. It helps repair bugs or add new functions to the system; code upgrades will eventually make everything better.

Performing firmware Upgrades

  1. Assisting in planning firmware upgrades on storage arrays and SAN switches.
  2. Perform firmware upgrades on storage arrays and SAN switches.
  3. Planning and performing storage management software upgrades.
  4. Deciding on the Frequency of the upgrades.
  5. Assisted Non-Disruptive Software Upgrades – A non-disruptive upgrade (NDU) is a software upgrade, hardware expansion, and or replacement that does not impact data availability or performance.
  6. Strengthened security capability.
  7. Quality of service (QoS) enhancement.

The benefits you will receive with the upgrades:

  • Performance Improvements – Obtain faster time to market, improve user experiences, and effortlessly deliver improved database, analytics, and reporting performance.
  • Security Capability is Strengthened – It will extend your security from data-at-rest encryption to application-layer encryption. It helps to meet increasingly stringent security requirements while offering data reduction benefits.
  • Application-level encryption on bare metal and Linux environments without compromising the storage efficiencies gained. Reduce feature for variable-block data reduction.
  • Quality of service (QoS) enhancements will improve all-flash storage efficiency and consistency, enabling powerful workload consolidation. Cloud Tech Services will assure your success with reliable mixed workload performance on all occasions.

Our Migration Strategy outlines the scope of the migration, migration approach, and methods involved for centralizing the systems from the various business units (BUs) to the target data center location. CTS will use migration strategies that minimize downtime requirements during the actual transition of servers and server instances from the source environments to the target environments.

Overview of the Storage Migration

  1. Planning and Preparation
  2. Inventory Discovery
  3. Migration Scheduling
  4. Change Management and Approval
  5. Pre-Migration
  6. Migration Process
  7. Post-Migration
  8. Owner Validation

8 Phases of Storage Migration

  1. Planning – The process begins with creating a data migration plan and sticking to it. The first step includes the evaluation of current data assets and carefully designing a simple migration plan. The planning stage includes four key phases, and they are:
  • Define the scope of migration – Here, we perform a high-level analysis of the source and target systems. Also, consulting the data users who will be impacted with the future changes. The plan here is to remove excess data and define the smallest set of data needed to run the system efficiently.
  • Evaluation of the source and target systems – It includes assessing the current system’s operation needs and requirements when they are moved to the new environment.
  • Defining the data standards will help the team understand the issues in each phase of migration.
  • Estimating timelines and budget for the migration process. Here, we have to set realistic goals to achieve our objective with project details, schedules, and deadlines for completion.

Inventory Discovery

CTS will assist in all phases of migration and modernization readiness. We simplify the discovery of existing applications and infrastructure and their dependencies. With the assessment of a storage system’s ability to be migrated and modernized and recommendations for modernization strategies are provided.

In the second stage, the data is examined and cleansed so that possible conflicts can be avoided and help in the identification of data quality issues. Also, helpful in removing duplicate data and anomalies before beginning the migration process.

Automation tools are usually employed to complete the time-consuming and labor-intensive tasks of auditing and profiling.

  • Collect server sizing information.
  • Identify cluster servers
  • Scan network segments for additional servers
  1. Migration Scheduling

We follow the best practices of storage migration that states to create complete data backup before migrating it to the new target system. It comes in handy in case of unexpected data loss and migration failures during the process.

We will perform scheduled migrations during maintenance periods when the customer is not using the system.

We plan and control migrations according to the production environments. We always prefer to migrate your configuration content during the maintenance period. Therefore, using the maintenance periods for storage migration will ensure that we can handle any errors, and restore the production system if necessary. With migration scheduling, the customer can receive:

  • Obtain schedule approval
  • Group servers into workloads
  • Verify the VMware environment will support the servers
  1. Change Management and Approval

Assessment and approval of change is an important part of any organization’s storage migration change management process. Though workflows will vary, oversight of documentation, hardware, contact information, and application code is important to minimize the risk and maximize client satisfaction.

The crucial thing here is to find the right balance of standard practices for business needs and flexible availability for excellent service. In this step, roles, components, essential goals, structures, and tools for change management and approvals process.

Therefore, a well-defined and well-executed migration change management system will minimize downtime. It will also ensure reliable and high-quality delivery in the most adaptive, communicative, a secure manner. Finally, it will help maximize value, reducing disruptions from unwanted incidents, and reworking. Here, we will make sure to approve:

  • Right-size servers
  • Complete change management requirements
  • Obtain technical approvals

Essential Checklist for Pre-Migration

  • We will assess the viability of storage migration with a pre-migration impact assessment.
  • Agreeing formally to the security restrictions for your storage migration project
  • Essential to identify the critical data migration project resources and requirements
  • Optimal project delivery structure is determined in advance.
  • Pre-Defined job descriptions for each member to understand their roles. And creating a structured task workflow and their sequence.
  • Creating suitable training documentation and training plan
  • Ensure the configuration management policy, software, secure, collaborative working environment.

ELT Specialist will be responsible for Migration Design (ELT stands for Extract, Transform, and Load)

Many other technologies can be implemented for data migration. However, ETL is considered ideal for such scenarios.

In this step, a design-specific rule is set for testing and migration. The ELT specialist once clarifies the acceptance criteria, assigns roles and responsibilities across the migration team members. Data mapping is considered an integral part of this phase. The essential pre-migration tasks are:

  • Validate workload
  • Validate virtual infrastructure
  • Perform a dry run of the servers if possible

Migration Process

In the execution phase, the focus will be on business goals and customer satisfaction.

In this step, the actual migration happens. Data extraction, transformation, and loading are performed by the engineers. If everything goes as planned, the process will be over in a few days with zero downtime and no risk of critical failure. The essential steps for migration execution will be to:

  • Inventory servers will gather information about their system files and configuration
  • Transfer of cloned data from the source servers to the target servers.
  • Switch over to the new servers (optional).
  • Add/remove specified software to the virtualized server.
  1. Post-Migration

The testing phase of data migration will involve checking data quality across phases.

The testing is not a separate phase, but an ongoing process while designing, migration execution and continues in the post-migration phase. With frequent testing, we can ensure the safer transition of data elements, their quality, and relevance with the requirements of the target infrastructure.

  • Verify all services running before the migration are running
  • Verify all hardware specific software has been removed
  1. Owner Validation

Post-migration audits will be about validating results with our clients

The post-audit scenario is to validate the data and results with the key business users before launching the migrated data. After confirming safe data migration and information to the target system, the old systems are retired, and the post audits are complete.

  • Conduct application validation
  • Approve or reject server migration

Benefits of Migration:
